1: Hello and thank you for your interest in this beautiful Mercedes 280 SL. If you are already familiar with some of my previous Euro 107 SL listings you will surely know that I am a big fan of these wonderful cars. I always list really nice above average or close to perfect low miles vehicles from good homes.
Here you can see some of my customers and the cars they have bought from me world wide:

2: Description:
1982 Euro
Mercedes 107
280 SL
(California Title and Registration).
4: This 1982 280 SL comes in a very rare and absolutely breathtaking non metallic Midnight Blue color (option code 904). In most passive lighting conditions the car appears black but with a very elegant deep dark blue shimmer. The very rare and unique gray/blue Hounds Tooth cloth interior (option code 032) and dark blue soft top (option code 744) compliment the cars' exterior beautifully. The car was special ordered and privately imported by a company employee of the then very well known Luxury/Sport car importer "Authorities Sales" in southern California.
5: The car was properly converted and federalized to US standards through "Authorities Sales" in California and has been titled and registered in California since 1982.
6: The car has been in the same family since and was only transferred once from the original owner to his wife.
7: The car is 90% original and completely accident and rust free. The car also comes with its owners manual, both hard and soft top removal tools, its original jack + tool kit, emergency triangle, first aid kit, spare tire, the very hard to find Factory DATA Sheet containing all of the cars' important production dates and option codes, a copy of a Mercedes Running-In Brochure and a copy of a 107 SL Soft and Hard Top Installation Guide. It currently has a newer Blaupunkt pullout Stereo but the original Becker Grand Prix Radio is also included.
8: Last but not least I will include a digital picture disk with additional helpful Mercedes 107 SL brochures and over 50 original full size 5 to 7 mega pixel digital pictures and the video of the car. You will also get an official Carfax/AutoCheck report verifying and guaranteeing the owner ship and low miles history .
9: This car not only looks but also performs beautifully and is one of the nicest 107 280 SL examples I have come across in a long time. Apart from couple of minor surface scratches the car is in near perfect condition for its age. I have seen quite a few of these cars and this one definitely stands out in a crowd of many used and abused 107 SLs.
10: If you have been in the market for one of these Euro 107 280 SLs, holding out for the right one to come along, your search may very well be over. If you read on and look at the pictures and video more closely, I am confident this car will definitely be worth your consideration.
11: For the most part the car has lived a very sheltered and pampered life mostly stored in a heated garage and only pulled out on special trips and sunny weather occasions. Even though it was not driven regularly the owners made sure to start and warm the car up at least once a week in order to keep all systems healthy.
12: Just as the exterior, the interior on this car is exceptionally well preserved. It is all original with minimal signs of wear. Even the dash board is in perfect shape without any cracks. This is quite remarkable since 107 dashes are quite prone to cracks and since this car has spent all its life in warm climates. The rare Zebrano wood is in very good condition as well without the typical fading, warping or cracking. As you can see in the pictures both seats and door panels are very well preserved. The carpet is in good shape but shows some sun fading/discoloration which is pretty normal for an almost 30 year old car. The front top floor mats are fairly new and show beautifully. The same goes for the dark blue soft top and Hard Top. Both are in beautiful condition with the soft top having been replaced couple of years ago. Even the sun visors are in brand new condition. They were also recently replaced with very expensive factory visors.
13. Mechanically the car is just as nice if not even nicer with all systems starting from the cold air conditioner down to the electric antenna working properly. The car always starts, idles very quietly and smoothly, stays cool, has excellent oil pressure and never smokes out of the tail pipe. Under normal driving conditions the car has very docile and mannered driving characteristics in the lower RPM range and unlike many older Classics can be easily driven and controlled by even an inexperienced driver.
14: If so desired, the car can also be driven very swiftly. Once in the mid to higher RPM range, or once the accelerator kick down is activated the engine really comes to life giving it true sports car characteristics. This particular 280 SL is noticeably quicker and more responsive which has to do with it being properly cared for and tuned.
15: The M-110 6 cylinder engines naturally can be a little noisier than their V-8 counterparts due to their smaller displacement, double over head cam shafts and higher RPM power band. Nevertheless this cars' well maintained and adjusted engine is extremely quite for a M-110 engine. A well maintained and adjusted M-110 6 cylinder engine can actually ad more to the 107 SL's sportiness and fun factor over their heavy V-8 counterparts.
16: There are no visible oil leaks or any other signs of neglect or abuse in the engine compartment or underneath the car. The transmission, brakes and suspension are all in good condition as well. The car is a true joy to drive and everything looks, feels and even smells the way a well taken care off Mercedes should. The car is very solid and stable on the road especially at higher speeds and the suspension and brakes bring this heavy car through turns and down to a full stand still in no time. Unlike many other convertibles, even with the top down this car feels solid with no or minimal body flex. Without a doubt the 107 SL is one of the most solid and safest convertibles ever produced. With the hard top on the car it is quiet as a coupe and as solid as a tank hence the very common German nick name “Panzer (Tank) Wagen”.
17: The car is equipped with a rare dual zone air-conditioning system which can be individually adjusted on each side. Unlike the automatic climate control systems the temperature can be manually and individually adjusted for each person. This is not only a very unique set up but it is much more reliable.
18: Furthermore the car comes with a rare factory heated driver seat (heated seats were not available on US 107 models) and a heated hardtop rear glass defroster. The car also comes with power steering, a power antenna, central power door locking and trunk system, factory 4 wheel power disk brakes and a very rare and expensive factory ABS braking system (this is very very rare for a car of this vintage as Mercedes was the first manufacture to introduce ABS only for some select vehicles in '81 and '82). This Mercedes' body is also fully zink dipped and galvanized and has a very thick rubberized factory undercoating making it very corrosion and bad weather resistant. The car also has a Catalytic converter with an electronic Lambda/Oxygen sensor management System making it fully California smog legal.
Here is the total Option and History breakdown:
19: Some of these options including the M-110 engine, the manual dual control Air Conditioning and the classic style Euro Bumpers were officially only available for the European 107 Market.
20: Last but not least the car comes with a clean California Title and current Registration which means the car has passed America's toughest emissions and safety regulations. This will certainly be beneficial to you no matter where you are planning to register and operate this car.
21: In closing I would like to once again point out how hard it is to find these Euro cars here in the US especially in such low mile condition. There are just a few hundred remaining in the US and the good ones are rapidly being snatched up and re-imported by the Europeans and collectors in other countries. Chances of seeing or finding one in your own neighborhood is slim to nothing. For all these reasons it is important to understand that the prices for these cars are continually going up and they most certainly will go up more drastically in the near future as they approach the 30 year mark. Just like the previous generation 113 280 SL and many other European and American Classics this upward trend will soon make these beautiful cars inaccessible for most people's budget. For now this car is not only a very smart and still affordable investment but unlike most other classics it can be economically and reliably enjoyed on a daily basis.
22: As you probably know, other lesser build quality Italian, British or American Roadsters already go for 3-5 times the money of this Mercedes and many of them have antiquated technologies, are very Spartanly equipped with no or little rust protection and most of them are difficult to drive and maintain. Even though they are very beautiful and special cars they just don’t get close to the build quality, reliability and usability of this Mercedes which could easily become not only your new Classic but also your daily driver. Or, you could spend $20.000 - $30.000 on a brand new car only to look like millions of others. Then shortly after only to find out broken heartedly that they depreciate over 50%-80% in the first few years. The 107 SL has reached its low value point some time ago and and particularly the rare Euro 107 SLs has been and will steadily continue to gain in value. As mentioned on my website, some original low mile Euro examples have been selling for more than two to three times the amount of what an average condition US 107 SL would sell for and in Europe well preserved Euro 107 SLs can fetch even substantially more.
23: Think about it: how often do you actually get to enjoy the classic looks of a car like this (this Euro small chrome bumper 107 SLs exterior is basically 95% identical to the early 1972 and 1973 107 SLs), but with modern day engine and transmission technology, amenities and safety features like ABS brakes, excellent rust protection, reasonable fuel economy, with the indestructible reliability and built quality of an 80ies Mercedes? This car is a true all year and weather multi task talent weather you only take it out on the weekends with the top down, or to work every day with either top up or down. Best of all it actually appreciates in value as you are using and enjoying it.
24: In its exceptional present low miles condition this SL is just about braking in and ready to put a big smile on its new owners face for many more years to come.
25: If you have been looking and holding out for a very special and unique Classic to use as your daily driver, or for a perfect entry level classic to attend shows and club events with, please consider this truly unique and beautiful example. This car is a sure winner and will make you proud each and every time you take it anywhere. Don't forget, Spring is just around the corner which is the perfect time to treat yourself or someone else you really care about to a very beautiful and special Timeless Motor Classic.
26: I always go over and above most other people’s abilities to describe a used vehicle starting from the write up, to the pictures but even then please bare in mind that this car is over 27 years old. Even though this car is in exceptional condition there is always a very small possibility for one to overlook a scratch here and a small detail there, which within reason should not take away from the general impression and integrity of the car. I take allot of pride and joy in being around these cars and it is of the utmost importance to me to keep it that way and to pass that experience on to you and your potentially new vehicle.
28: If you have any further questions about the car you are welcome to call or email me and I will try my best to accommodate you. If you are from out of town, I will gladly walk around the car while you are on the phone addressing, inspecting and photographing any particular areas you might still be interested in seeing.
29: If you are local, Please call 510-232-9999 to set up an appointment to see the car.
30: For International buyers: I have shipped cars all over the world (mostly with Schumacher International) and can assist with shipping to anywhere in the world. For German buyers: if preferred, you can address me in German as I speak German fluently.
